Commercial aircrafts are equipped with batteries that power their electronic systems. A well-known problem called thermal runway causes conventional batteries—lithium-ion batteries in particular—to overheat and catch fire. Recently, 50 Boeing 787 Dreamliners were grounded for 92 days due to this problem at an estimated cost of $375 million—before the cost of repairs.
