Dr. Andrew J. Manning
Battery technology expert particularly in the areas of R&D and complex manufacturing.
Dr. Manning is the President and Chief Technical Officer of Lithium Battery Engineering, which provides consulting services, has received several SBIR awards, conducts commercial R&D, and provides prototype design and manufacturing services.
His clients include lithium ion cell and battery manufacturing companies, component producers, battery end users and investment companies.
Dr. Manning’s technical experience includes lithium ion, lithium polymer, lithium metal, chemical super capacitors, coating, cell design and manufacturing and battery design and assembly. He also has experience in strategic planning, marketing and market development and financial analysis. Dr. Manning also has manufacturing experience, including plant design and construction, start-up, process scale-up and operation.
Dr. Manning is currently working to complete development and commercialize FlashCharge Batteries’ Super Capacitors. Until recently, he helped commercialize Freya Energy’s TAZZD safety separator which protects lithium ion cells from overcharge, overheating and physical damage (which he developed). He also worked with Battelle Memorial Laboratory on scale-up and commercialization of a conformal/structural cell (which he developed). He was currently under contract to partner on a super cap / lithium ion hybrid cell and was formerly contracted to develop new higher energy density cells through the synergistic combination of commercial materials.
Dr. Manning was formerly the Director of Engineering of Electro Energy where he led the team that achieved the first commercially successful 18650 production from the only large scale plant in the US in Gainesville, FL. Prior to that Dr. Manning was the President, COO and CTO of Lithium Technology Corporation and Managing Director of GAIA Akkumulatorenwerke, (LTC’s wholly owned subsidiary in Germany) where he led the business from a $500K R&D shop to $4.5M early stage manufacturing operation with Tier One customers such as Lockheed Martin, NASA, MBDA and Audi.
Dr. Manning led the development large format and high power lithium ion cells including the development of ruggedized cells for the Atlas V launch vehicle and pressure tolerant cells that powered the Phoenix X-Bot that took the photos of the Titanic. Dr. Manning earned his PhD and undergraduate degrees in Chemical Engineering from Cornell University.
